Nobody drives to Hinkley Point C. You drive to a bus.
That single fact changes how you should judge accommodation. The question isn’t how many miles your apartment sits from the site, it’s how long it takes to reach your park and ride, whether you’ll get a space, and what time the bus actually leaves. A property eight miles further out with a clean motorway run can put you on site earlier than one in the middle of Bridgwater at shift change.
Here’s how the journey really works from each of our Somerset bases, which roads cause the trouble, and where the time actually goes.
How the Journey Actually Works
Three legs, every day:
- Door to park and ride: your drive, usually 5 to 20 minutes
- Park and ride to site: the project bus, run by Somerset Passenger Solutions
- Arrival at North Plaza: then badge in and walk to your work area
If you drive in order to board a bus, your vehicle has to be parked at a dedicated HPC park and ride. Leaving it on a residential street in Bridgwater isn’t an alternative, worker registration plates are recorded, streets are patrolled, and every worker signs a code of conduct that prohibits it.
There are four main park and ride sites:

The whole network, plus routes from Burnham, Brean, Combwich, Cannington, Taunton, Weston-super-Mare and Bristol, came out of roughly £20 million of investment in local transport infrastructure.

The Roads: A39, A38 and the C182
Three roads do all the work, and each fails in a different way.
The A39 west of Bridgwater is the main artery to site. It runs out through Wembdon and around Cannington on the bypass (Brymore Way), then hands over to the C182 Hinkley Point Road for the last stretch past Wick Lane, Burton and Shurton to the southern roundabout. The C182 is a single carriageway country road doing the job of a site access road, when anything happens on it, there is no parallel route.
Two things regularly slow it. Abnormal loads move from Combwich Wharf along the C182 to site on announced dates, and resurfacing work on the C182 and the Cannington bypass is done in overnight phases with full closures between roughly 7pm and 5am, which hits the night shift rather than the day shift.
The A39 east of Bridgwater – Bath Road and Puriton Hill towards Junction 23, is the one to watch for a different reason. Cable and infrastructure works for the Agratas gigafactory at Gravity have brought phased traffic controls to this stretch, and more are expected as that project builds out.
The A38 at Dunball is your approach to J23, and the roundabout above the motorway there has been upgraded specifically to cope with project traffic.
Two seasonal warnings. The A39 is exposed and ices readily, a workforce bus left the road near Bridgwater in icy conditions in January 2023, with ice found to be the significant factor, and services run cautiously in frost for good reason. And Bridgwater Carnival, in early November, closes the town centre entirely for an evening. If you’re commuting through Bridgwater that week, plan around it.

Journey Times From Each of Our Bases
Door to site, using the bus rather than driving the whole way. Times are indicative and assume clear roads, add 15 to 20 minutes at shift change.

For context on the bus leg alone, workforce services have historically run Burnham to North Plaza in around 45 minutes and Bridgwater to North Plaza in under 30, with Cannington closer to 20. Check the app for your route and your shift, because start times drive everything.
Why Highbridge Works Better Than People Expect
On a map, Highbridge looks like the wrong answer, 17 miles out when Bridgwater is 11. In practice it’s often the better commute, for three reasons.
You start on the motorway. Junction 22 is on Highbridge’s doorstep, and the run south to J23 is a single motorway junction — about eight miles of dual carriageway at five in the morning. That’s more predictable than crossing Bridgwater town centre, which is where everyone else is queuing at the same time.
The corridor is already served. Burnham and Brean services have run this route for years, so if you’d rather not drive at all, the option exists.
You get parking, space and a lower rate. One-bedroom rents in Highbridge and Burnham typically run £650–£750 against £700–£850 in Bridgwater, availability holds up better when a fit-out package mobilises, and the town is quiet in the evenings, which matters if you’re sleeping in daylight.
The honest trade-off is ten minutes each way and a quieter high street. For a night-shift worker, both are features.

What Adds Time, and How to Beat It
The gap between the timetable and reality is usually one of these:
- Shift change. Everyone moves at once. Add 15–20 minutes and stop treating off-peak drive times as your commute.
- The park and ride queue. Arriving five minutes before the bus means joining the back of it. Ten minutes earlier is a different experience entirely.
- The C182 last mile. One incident and there’s no alternative route. It’s the single biggest source of unplanned delay.
- Overnight roadworks. Closures between 7pm and 5am affect the night shift and the early starts, not the 7am crowd.
- Winter mornings. Frost on the A39 slows everything. In December and January, leave earlier by default.
Three habits that fix most of it: check the app the night before rather than the morning of, park in the same area of the site every day so you’re not hunting for your car after a twelve-hour shift, and for your first week, leave ten minutes earlier than you think you need to.
Where to Base Yourself
Pick by park and ride first, then by price. Anything that puts you within 15 minutes of J23 or J24 with a guaranteed parking space at the property is doing the job.
