If you are searching for East West Rail jobs at the Bletchley depot and expecting to mobilise this winter, read the timeline first. The depot has a confirmed location and a confirmed purpose, but it does not yet have planning consent, and construction is not due to start until the back end of the decade.
That does not mean Milton Keynes is quiet. The railway between Bicester and Bletchley is already rebuilt, Chiltern Railways has trained its drivers and finished a new crew depot at Bletchley, and a substantial upgrade to Bletchley station is in design. Meanwhile Universal’s £5 billion resort 20 miles up the line at Bedford has just appointed 23 contractors and is into enabling works, which is what will actually squeeze beds in this corridor.
This guide sets out what is being built at Bletchley and when, who is hiring, and where rail crews working in Milton Keynes should stay, with real 2026 rates.
What is the East West Rail depot at Bletchley?

It is a train maintenance depot planned for Bletchley West, alongside Whaddon Road, west of Bletchley and north of Newton Longville. East West Rail confirmed it as the preferred site in January 2026. It will stable, clean, inspect and maintain the trains that run the Oxford to Cambridge route.
| Site | Bletchley West, next to Whaddon Road, north of Newton Longville |
| Function | Train stabling, cleaning, inspection and maintenance |
| Capacity | Sidings for up to 20 five-car trains, each around 120 metres long |
| Also includes | Traction power overhaul, train wash, staff accommodation, parking, secure gatehouse |
| Permanent jobs | More than 100 full-time roles once operational |
| Site confirmed | 28 January 2026 |
| Environmental commitment | Both layout options target a 10% net biodiversity gain |
A depot is a long-life asset, which is why the permanent headcount matters as much as the construction headcount. Those 100-plus jobs are technicians, cleaners, shunters, controllers and administrators, based in Bletchley for decades rather than for a package.
When will the Bletchley depot actually be built?
Not in 2026 or 2027. East West Rail is running design update sessions now, with final proposals due in 2027 and a Development Consent Order application in the same year. Approval is expected around 2028, and construction is expected to take roughly three years after that.
| Stage | Expected timing |
|---|---|
| Design update sessions with the community | 2026 |
| Final depot proposals published | 2027 |
| Development Consent Order application | 2027 |
| DCO decision expected | 2028 |
| Main construction | Roughly three years from consent |
For anyone planning accommodation, that splits the work into two very different waves.
Now to 2028 is survey, design, ground investigation, ecology and consenting work. Small teams, short visits, often two or three people for a few nights at a time, and a lot of it done by consultants rather than contractors.
From 2028 onwards is the civils and building phase: earthworks, track, buildings, signalling, power and fit-out. That is when whole crews arrive for months at a time and when local bed supply gets tested.
If someone is offering you a Bletchley depot construction start in the next 12 months, check what they actually mean. It is far more likely to be the station works, the wider Marston Vale programme, or enabling and survey work.
What East West Rail work is happening in Milton Keynes now?

The infrastructure is built and the service is waiting on an industrial relations dispute rather than on engineering. Here is the position as at late September 2026.
- The line is finished. The Bicester to Bletchley section was rebuilt and handed over to Network Rail in December 2024, and is now part of the national network.
- Winslow station is ready. The £5 million station has been complete since the line was handed over and has still not seen a passenger service.
- Chiltern Railways is the operator, named in March 2025 for the first stage between Oxford and Milton Keynes.
- Drivers are trained. Chiltern has recruited and trained 44 drivers and completed a new driver depot at Bletchley.
- Services are in the timetable. Oxford to Winslow, Bletchley and Milton Keynes services were written into the December 2026 timetable, but no start date has been confirmed, and in August 2026 the rail minister would only say services could begin by year end.
- The blocker is the RMT dispute over driver-only operation, which was still unresolved when Chiltern transferred into public ownership under DfT Operator Limited on 20 September 2026, becoming the sixth operator to do so.
- Bletchley station is being redesigned as an interchange between East West Rail, the West Coast Main Line and local services. An eight-week public consultation ran from 14 April to 9 June 2026, covering a larger ticket hall on the west side, more cycle parking, blue badge bays and bus drop-off. A new eastern entrance, cutting 600 metres off the walk to the town centre, was presented as conditional on third-party funding, and by June 2026 government had committed £17 million towards it with £5 million from Milton Keynes City Council.
So the near-term work in Milton Keynes is station design and delivery, depot consenting, and the operational ramp-up at Bletchley. It is real work, but it is staff and specialists rather than large crews.
How many jobs will East West Rail create?
Around 1,000 direct construction jobs plus roughly 500 in the supply chain for the first stage, with later stages potentially supporting more than 8,000 construction roles. Those are the figures East West Rail gave in December 2024. It has been careful not to put a number on permanent operational jobs, saying services are still some years away, although the Bletchley depot alone accounts for more than 100.
| Category | Figure |
|---|---|
| Stage 1 direct construction jobs (Oxford to Bletchley) | About 1,000 |
| Stage 1 supply chain jobs | About 500 |
| Later stages, construction | Potentially more than 8,000 |
| Bletchley depot, permanent | More than 100 |
| Local economic contribution, 2021/22 | £1.1 billion |
The programme itself has been rephased to deliver in sections rather than all at once: up to five trains an hour at peak with five-car trains, Marston Vale Line electrification and upgrades in the early 2030s, Tempsford station from 2030, Bedford and Cambridge works in the mid-2030s, and the full Oxford to Cambridge service late in the 2030s. Work in Milton Keynes therefore stretches across a decade, not a single season.
Who is hiring for East West Rail jobs?

Four different employers, and they advertise in different places.
- East West Railway Company for programme, design, consenting, land and community roles. This is the client organisation taking the depot through its DCO.
- Network Rail for infrastructure and asset roles once sections are handed over.
- Chiltern Railways, now publicly owned, for operational roles on the Oxford to Milton Keynes service. Its recruitment of customer service inspectors at Bletchley in mid-2026 was one of the clearest signals that a launch was getting closer.
- The construction supply chain for the civils, track, signalling and building packages that follow consent. These are advertised by the contractors and their agencies, not by East West Rail.
If you are a contractor rather than a permanent hire, the practical point is that your accommodation is usually arranged or reimbursed by your employer. Ask which it is before you travel, because it decides whether you are booking a room or claiming a lodging allowance.
Where should contractors stay for the Bletchley depot and station works?
Bletchley itself for the shortest commute, Furzton or Walnut Tree for quiet residential stock with parking, and Central Milton Keynes only if you want to walk to the station and the bars. The depot site sits roughly two miles west of Bletchley station, so anywhere in south Milton Keynes puts you within 15 minutes of both it and the station works.
| Base | Approx. distance to Bletchley | What it offers |
|---|---|---|
| Bletchley | On site | Closest to the station works, Bletchley Park, cheapest stock in the city |
| Furzton | 2 to 3 miles | Quiet 1980s and 1990s housing, lake, parking on the drive, no nightlife |
| Walnut Tree | 4 to 5 miles | Residential, easy grid-road run, good for whole-house crew bookings |
| Central Milton Keynes | About 5 miles | Walk to MK Central, restaurants and the theatre, but paid parking |
| Fairfields | 7 to 8 miles | Newer stock on the west side, handy for the A5 and Buckingham |
Milton Keynes is a grid city, so distance matters less than which side of the grid you are on. A base in the south of the city reaches Bletchley in 10 to 15 minutes without touching a town centre.
Furzton is the one most rail crews underrate. It is the district immediately north of Bletchley, with two railway stations within a couple of miles, a lake to walk round after a shift and off-street parking as standard. Our neighbourhood guide to Furzton covers prices, schools, transport and what the area is actually like if you end up there for a year.
How far is Bletchley from the motorway and the rest of the route?
Bletchley sits between the A5 and the M1, with junctions 13 and 14 both 15 to 20 minutes away by grid road and the A421 running east. That matters on a linear project, because rail packages rarely stay in one place.
| Destination | Approx. distance from Bletchley |
|---|---|
| Milton Keynes Central station | 3 to 4 miles |
| M1 junction 14 | 8 to 9 miles |
| M1 junction 13 | 8 to 9 miles |
| Winslow | 10 to 12 miles |
| Bedford | 20 miles |
| Bicester | 20 to 22 miles |
| Oxford | 35 miles |
Distances are approximate. The useful conclusion is that a base in south Milton Keynes covers Bletchley, Winslow and the western end of the route, and still reaches Bedford in well under an hour when the Marston Vale works start.
Why is Milton Keynes accommodation tighter than it looks?
Because the biggest bed consumer in this corridor is not the railway. Universal’s resort at the former Kempston Hardwick brickworks, south of Bedford, moved into delivery in 2026, and its construction phase alone is expected to support around 20,000 jobs.
- £5 billion of investment from Comcast NBCUniversal, with £1.3 billion of government infrastructure support.
- 476 acres, opening in 2031, with enabling works already under way and a five-year main construction programme.
- 23 contractors appointed by September 2026, including Sir Robert McAlpine, Wates, Galliford Try, Morgan Sindall, Bovis, Careys and Winvic, plus consultants such as Arup, Mott MacDonald and AtkinsRéalis.
- 8,000 permanent jobs once the resort is open.
Bedford’s own accommodation cannot absorb that, so Milton Keynes becomes the overflow, exactly as Bridgwater does for Hinkley Point C. Add the city’s ordinary business travel, rail and logistics work, and the pattern is familiar: rates stay reasonable, availability does not.
The practical response is to book earlier than feels necessary, and to fix your accommodation before your package start date moves rather than after.
How much does contractor accommodation in Milton Keynes cost?
Budget £85 to £130 a night for a one-bedroom serviced apartment, or £25 to £40 per person per night if a crew takes a whole house. Those rates normally include bills, Wi-Fi, a full kitchen, weekly housekeeping and, outside the central boulevards, parking.
| Property | Typical nightly rate | Sleeps |
|---|---|---|
| One-bedroom apartment | £85 to £130 | 2 to 4 |
| Two-bedroom apartment | £120 to £180 | 4 to 6 |
| Three or four-bedroom house | £180 to £280 | 6 to 8 |
| Five-bedroom house | £250 to £350 | Up to 10 |
Long stays are where the money moves, because operators discount duration more readily than headcount:
| Nights booked | Typical discount |
|---|---|
| 7+ | 5 to 10% |
| 14 to 20 | 10 to 15% |
| 30+ | 15 to 25% |
| 90+ | 20 to 30% |
Two further levers are worth knowing.
The 28-day VAT rule. If the same person stays continuously for more than 28 nights on one booking, a reduced value rule applies from night 29, taking the effective VAT on the accommodation element down to roughly 4%. A run of weekly reservations does not qualify.
Parking. Central Milton Keynes charges from 7am to 6pm every day of the week, including Sundays, so a “cheap” central apartment without a space is not cheap. Our guide to serviced apartment rates and parking in Milton Keynes has the detail by area, and for the national picture on what a bed should cost, see what to budget per night for contractor accommodation.
What should rail crews specify when booking?
Night working and possession schedules, because they change what a property needs to be. Rail work is not nine to five: a track or signalling package runs at night and at weekends, and a crew sleeping during the day needs a property that allows for it.
Send these with every enquiry:
- Shift pattern, including nights and weekend possessions
- Daytime quiet and blackout, and no scheduled cleaning mid-morning when the crew is asleep
- Self check-in, because arrival at 2am after a shift is normal on rail packages
- Parking, with the number of vehicles and whether any are vans with tools
- Laundry in the property, not a launderette run at the end of a night shift
- A kitchen, since nothing is open when a possession finishes
- Flexible end dates, because possessions move and this programme has already slipped once
- Invoicing, with company name, PO reference and payment terms
That list is the difference between a booking that works for a rail crew and one that technically has enough beds. Our guide to workers’ accommodation with parking, kitchens and laundry goes through why each of those matters on long shifts.
How far ahead should you book for an East West Rail package?
Before the package is confirmed, not after. On a programme where the start date has moved repeatedly, the crews that end up paying hotel rates are the ones who waited for certainty.
A short checklist:
- Book one continuous stay in one name rather than rolling weeklies, so the 28-day VAT rule applies
- Ask for an all-in figure covering bills, Wi-Fi, parking and cleaning
- Check the notice period before you check the rate
- Confirm parking in writing, one space per vehicle
- Say the words “night shift” at enquiry stage, not on arrival
Guests House runs serviced apartments and whole houses across Milton Keynes, including Walnut Tree and Fairfields, all with parking, full kitchens, laundry, fast Wi-Fi and self check-in. We invoice companies directly with a PO reference, and rates step down the longer the booking runs.
East West Rail jobs and accommodation: FAQs
Where is the East West Rail Bletchley depot?

Can rail crews check in after a night shift?
With self check-in properties, yes. Hotels and some operators cannot handle a 2am arrival, so confirm it before booking.
Does the Universal resort at Bedford affect Milton Keynes accommodation?
Yes. Its construction phase is expected to support around 20,000 jobs, enabling works are already under way, and Milton Keynes is the natural overflow for a project that size.
Is there a discount for long stays?
Typically 15 to 25% beyond 30 nights and 20 to 30% beyond 90, plus the reduced VAT rate from night 29 on a single continuous booking.
